On November 2, 2022, our dear sweet dog, Fang, passed away. It was sudden and heart-wrenching. I don't go a day without thinking about him. We adopted him in Texas. They told us he was 3 years old, but at his first vet appointment the doctor said he was more like 8 or 9. We could tell. He was quiet, well-mannered, and was content to lay about. Perfect fit for our home. Before we took him home with us, the pictures the rescue sent us of him always included some fly on or near him. We bought him a dog bed in the shape of a ginkgo leaf.

I have never stopped leaning on his memory when I feel my lowest, and he was often with me when I would record the sounds of birds and/or frogs. I decided, as a way to dive headfirst into the pain of losing him, I would record in places he would like to go (the dog park, the beach at the lake, the back yard) and piece those together with recordings of when he was alive. It doesn't make me feel better. Even though he wasn't loud, the absence of his jingling tags and snuffling snout is enough to know how big his place in our hearts was.
